Why Drinking Water Does Not Work
Vomiting and diarrhea lose you fluid and electrolytes far faster than you can replace them by mouth. With norovirus or a stomach virus, the stomach lining is inflamed and irritable, so oral fluids often come straight back up. Each attempt loses you more than it replaces.
That is how people dehydrate quickly with what is otherwise a self limiting illness. The dehydration frequently becomes worse than the bug itself, and it is the reason emergency departments see so many people with gastroenteritis. What they mostly do there is give IV fluids.
An IV treatment breaks that loop. Fluid goes in through a vein and reaches circulation regardless of what your stomach is doing.
What Is in Our Stomach Bug Drip
The Stomach Bug drip is $325 and contains, in one litre of saline:
- One litre of IV fluid with electrolytes. The part that actually matters. This is what replaces lost fluids.
- Vitamin B12 and B-complex. To replenish what a few days of not eating has depleted.
- Vitamin C and zinc. Nutrient support while you recover.
Full ingredients are on the drip menu. If you want fluid alone with no additions, plain IV hydration is available and is often all that is needed.
On anti-nausea medication: some mobile IV services carry it and some do not, because it is a prescription item and availability depends on the medical direction in place. Ask when you book rather than assuming, and do not book on the expectation of receiving it.
When to Go to Hospital Instead
This is the important section and it comes before the sales pitch on purpose.
Call 911 or go to an emergency department, rather than booking a drip, if there is any of the following:
- Blood in vomit or stool, or stool that is black and tarry
- Severe or constant abdominal pain, particularly if it is localised to one spot
- Confusion, extreme drowsiness, or difficulty waking someone
- No urine for eight hours or more, or very dark urine with dizziness on standing
- A high fever that will not come down, or a stiff neck with it
- Signs of severe dehydration such as fainting, a racing heart, or skin that stays pinched
- Symptoms in a baby, a very young child, or a frail older adult
- Vomiting that has continued beyond two days without improvement
A mobile IV service is appropriate for a healthy adult with a self limiting bug who is getting dehydrated. It is not appropriate for anyone who might be seriously ill, and we would rather turn a booking away than take one we should not.
What an IV Will and Will Not Do
It will rehydrate you, replace electrolytes, and usually make you feel substantially more human within the hour. Dehydration is responsible for a lot of how awful you feel with a stomach virus, so treating it changes things quickly.
It will not cure the infection or stop the diarrhea. Norovirus and food poisoning are cleared by your immune system in their own time, generally one to three days. Nothing in the bag shortens that. An IV manages the dehydration while your body deals with the bug.
That distinction matters. You may still be unwell afterwards. You should be considerably less depleted.
How the Visit Works
You do not travel anywhere, which is the point when you are in this state.
- Book and complete the intake. Be accurate about how long it has been going on and whether you are keeping anything down. The clinical team reviews it and will redirect you if the answers suggest you need more than an IV.
- A nurse comes to your address. They confirm your symptoms and check vitals before anything is placed.
- The drip runs. Around 30 to 60 minutes. You can stay in bed or on the sofa near a bathroom.
- Aftercare. Small sips of oral fluids once you can tolerate them, plain food when you are ready, and clear guidance on what would mean seeking further care.

Will an IV drip stop diarrhea?
No. An IV treats the dehydration diarrhea causes, not the diarrhea itself. The infection clears on its own timeline, usually one to three days. What the fluids do is stop you becoming dangerously depleted while that happens.
What is the best IV fluid for vomiting and diarrhea?
An isotonic saline solution, which is what a standard litre bag is. It replaces both the fluid and the sodium you have lost. Vitamins are optional extras; the saline is doing the work.
How do hospitals treat stomach viruses?
Largely the same way: IV fluids for dehydration, anti-nausea medication where appropriate, and monitoring. They can also run bloods and rule out something more serious, which a mobile service cannot. That is exactly why the warning signs above matter.
How quickly will I feel better?
Most people feel noticeably better before the bag finishes, and that is mainly rehydration. The underlying illness still needs to run its course.
Can I get an IV at home for food poisoning?
